The different between Passion, Skills and Gifts – why they are not the same

As multi-passionate entrepreneurs, you are likely familiar with the terms passions, gifts, and skills. However, while these words are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct concepts. 

We will unravel the differences between these terms and lay the foundation for how to leverage each one effectively in your journey as a multi-passionate individual.

Defining Passions, Gifts, and Skills

1. Passions: The Interlink Between Purpose, Values, and Beliefs

One of the most common misconceptions is that passion, gift, and skill are synonymous. However, passions are uniquely tied to your core purpose, values, and beliefs.

The word multi-passionate itself contains passion, but what does it truly mean to be passionate about something? 

Passion is not merely a strong liking or attraction toward an activity or subject. It is, in fact, the result of a deep interconnection between what you believe in, what you value, and your purpose in life. 

For instance, your passion for wine, soulful music, animals, or even psychology is not random. It emerges because these interests align with your core beliefs and values.

The Importance of Purpose in Passion

When you find yourself passionate about something, it’s often because it resonates with your larger purpose. Your purpose is the guiding compass that helps you navigate your life’s journey, and passions are the expressions of this alignment. 

Understanding this connection is key to unlocking why you feel so strongly about certain things.

2. Gifts: The Interlink Between Your Purpose, Background, and Experiences

While many mistakenly equate gifts with passions, they are distinctly different. Your gifts are the special abilities or talents you possess that result from an interlink between your purpose, background, and experiences.

Your background plays a significant role in shaping your gifts. Whether it’s the environment you grew up in, the relationships you’ve built, or the struggles you’ve overcome, these elements shape your unique abilities. 

For example, you may have a gift for leadership because of challenges you faced early on or perhaps because you thrived in a corporate setting. 

Your background, story, and experiences all contribute to this gift, making it a powerful tool for success.

Gifts as Tools for Fulfillment

Your gifts are a critical component of your entrepreneurial journey, enabling you to integrate your life experiences into a thriving business model that brings both personal fulfillment and professional success.

3. Skills: The Interlink Between Background, Experiences, and Values

Finally, we come to skills. While passions and gifts are often linked to intrinsic qualities and beliefs, skills are practical abilities that can be acquired or honed. 

However, the process of equipping yourself with a skill is not arbitrary. Skills emerge at the intersection of your background or experiences and your values or beliefs.

For example, you might find it easy to acquire certain skills like writing because of early exposure to reading or language, or because your values emphasize clear communication. 

On the other hand, some skills might be harder to acquire because they don’t resonate with your experiences or beliefs.

For instance, while some people easily pick up new languages, others struggle—this is often a reflection of how their experiences and values align (or don’t align) with the learning process.

Skills as Essential Business Tools

Understanding how your skills have been shaped can help you better leverage them in your business.
